Total cereal was a popular breakfast choice known for its high vitamin and mineral content. While it’s no longer available, many people seek alternatives with similar nutritional profiles. Whole-Grain vs. Refined-Grain: A Comparative Study

Seventeen healthy participants consumed either a WG or RG diet for two weeks, with a washout period between interventions. The diets were identical except for the grain type, with the WG diet incorporating 150g of whole grains daily. Results showed that the WG diet tended to lower total and LDL cholesterol (both P = 0.09) without affecting HDL cholesterol, fasting glucose, C-reactive protein, or homocysteine levels.

Furthermore, the WG diet significantly increased plasma betaine and alkylresorcinol concentrations after one week (P = 0.01 and P < 0.0001, respectively). Betaine, found in whole grains, supports liver function and may protect against heart disease. Alkylresorcinols are bioactive compounds with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.

Gut Health and Whole Grains

The study also revealed changes in gut health parameters. The WG diet led to an increase in Clostridium leptum bacteria in feces, potentially beneficial bacteria in the gut. There was also a trend toward decreased fecal water pH (P = 0.096) and increased stool frequency (P < 0.0001) with the WG diet. These findings suggest that WG consumption may promote a healthier gut environment.

Choosing a Total Cereal Alternative

While Total cereal is no longer available, this study highlights the benefits of choosing whole-grain cereals. Look for cereals with a high whole-grain content, rich in fiber and nutrients like betaine. Consider options that provide a good source of vitamins and minerals, similar to the original Total cereal. The positive effects of WG on cholesterol, gut health, and the presence of beneficial compounds like betaine and alkylresorcinols underscore the importance of incorporating whole grains into your diet.
