Eh Compare Parkrun Adventures: Community Spirit and Personal Bests at Joe Creason

Can you dig it? Yes, we absolutely can! Just like the catchy tune “Eh Cumpari,” our parkrun events are all about community, rhythm, and shared enjoyment. Inspired by the feel-good vibes of Chicago’s “Saturday in the Park” and its nod to the Italian novelty song, we recently hosted the 170th edition of Louisville’s favorite free weekly timed 5K, bringing together runners and walkers in the spirit of “Eh Cumpari.”

The song lyric, “Eh, cumpari, ci vo sunari,” which translates to “Hey buddy, do you want to play the music?” perfectly encapsulates the welcoming and inclusive atmosphere of parkrun. It’s about inviting everyone to join in the fun, whether you’re a seasoned runner or taking your first steps. And just like the global parkrun community, we saw a fantastic turnout, almost matching the energy of our friends at Favorita parkrun in Palermo, Italy, as pictured below.

We welcomed 20 participants to Joe Creason parkrun this week, a close comparison to the 21 who enjoyed Favorita parkrun. Each event, while geographically separated, shares the same core values of community, health, and free, accessible fun for everyone.

Leading the pack this week was Will M, who crossed the finish line first for the 8th time with an impressive time of 23:10. Hot on his heels was Amy J, the first female finisher, clocking in at 23:31. We were thrilled to welcome 2 first-timers to the parkrun family and celebrate 2 personal best achievements, demonstrating the “Eh Compare” spirit of friendly competition and personal improvement.

A special highlight of event #170 was celebrating Derek L‘s 50th parkrun milestone! Derek has been a consistent and valued member of our community since September 2021. His dedication and positive attitude embody the true essence of parkrun. Reaching 50 parkruns is a significant achievement, placing Derek among a select group of Joe Creason parkrun stalwarts – only the 11th person to reach this milestone here. This personal journey reflects the “eh compare” aspect of self-improvement and commitment that parkrun fosters.

Saturday’s event was made possible by the letter Q-for-Quality volunteers and 10 amazing individuals. A huge thank you to run director Rory J and our fantastic volunteer team: Hannah S, Louise M, Charlotte G, Geoff G, Mike N, Kristie M, Amy J, Chris M, and first-time tail walker Michael P. Their “eh compare”-able dedication ensures the smooth running and welcoming atmosphere of our weekly event.

Join us for event number 171 on the 14th! We anticipate celebrating a v25 volunteer milestone and possibly another 50-run achievement. Be there to experience the “eh compare” camaraderie and community spirit firsthand!

See you soon,

-Geoff
