Note: This is my fifth price comparison update in six years. I initially conducted this research in 2019, with updates in 2021, 2022, and 2023. Skipping 2020 due to the unprecedented circumstances, I’ve returned in April 2024 amidst rising inflation to provide you with the most current data to help manage your grocery expenses.
Methodology: How We Conducted This Grocery Store Price Comparison
To conduct a thorough comparison of grocery store prices, I focused on major grocery chains with a significant presence across the United States. Walmart, known for its national reach and low-price strategy, was an obvious choice. Aldi, aggressively positioning itself as a low-cost leader, was also essential to include. Meijer and Kroger, regional giants recognized for their wide selection and promotional sales, rounded out the comparison.
I excluded big-box stores like Costco and Sam’s Club due to their bulk sizes, which aren’t directly comparable to typical grocery store offerings. Specialty stores like Trader Joe’s, Whole Foods, and Winco Foods were also omitted because their product selection and pricing models differ significantly, making a fair apples-to-apples price comparison challenging for everyday grocery items. Therefore, for this research, Walmart, Aldi, Meijer, and Kroger became the four contenders in our quest to compare grocery store prices.
My process began with creating a comprehensive list of 183 common grocery items spanning ten essential categories that represent typical household needs:
- Dairy
- Pantry Staples
- Canned Goods
- Condiments (like peanut butter and ketchup)
- Baking Supplies
- Meat (Fresh and Frozen)
- Frozen Foods
- Paper Products & Household Items
- Personal Care Products
- Diapers
This list was carefully curated, starting with frequently purchased items for any household, then incorporating items our family regularly uses, and finally, including suggestions from the Joyfully Thriving Facebook community to ensure broad relevance.
Armed with this extensive list, I meticulously visited each of the four stores and meticulously recorded prices. I leveraged store apps where available to double-check and supplement in-store price checks.
To maintain consistency, I primarily compared generic or store-brand versions of products, opting for the most affordable option available at each store. Brand-name products were used when store brands were not available across all stores for a specific item. Fresh produce was intentionally excluded from this price comparison due to significant seasonal and regional price fluctuations.
A crucial aspect of this methodology was comparing prices on an ounce-to-ounce basis. When package sizes varied, I calculated the unit price to ensure accurate price comparisons, always selecting the lowest price per ounce. I aimed to compare similar sizes whenever possible to minimize discrepancies.
Finally, to provide a clear picture of everyday affordability, this price comparison is based on regular, non-sale prices. Sales and promotional discounts were deliberately excluded to determine which store consistently offers the lowest base prices.
It’s important to remember that prices can vary regionally. The data presented here reflects prices in Northern Indiana as of April 2024. However, the relative price comparisons and trends observed are likely to be valuable regardless of your location, providing a solid framework for understanding grocery store price differences and making informed shopping choices.
2024 Grocery Store Price Comparison Results: Aldi Takes the Crown
After weeks of data collection and analysis, the grocery store price comparison results are in! To effectively analyze the data, I first identified the absolute lowest price for each of the 183 items across the four stores. In cases of a tie for the lowest price, all tying stores were noted.
Recognizing that price differences were often minimal, sometimes just pennies apart, I also marked items priced within 5 cents of the lowest price as “second lowest.” This acknowledges stores that are highly competitive and offer near-lowest prices, which is valuable information for shoppers considering convenience and store preferences.
In some instances, stores had identical prices, resulting in multiple stores sharing the “lowest price” designation. Similarly, several stores sometimes qualified for the “second lowest price.” All instances were meticulously counted to provide a comprehensive overview of the price comparison.
The final tally, representing both counts and percentages out of the 183 items, clearly reveals the landscape of grocery store prices in 2024:

Kroger, in contrast, holds the fewest lowest price points. While some categories show tight price competition across all four stores, these instances are relatively infrequent.
Aldi’s dominance is further emphasized by the fact that it offers the lowest price on nearly two-thirds of the items we compared. This significant price advantage is hard to ignore and strengthens the case for Aldi as the cheapest grocery store for everyday items. However, it’s worth noting that Aldi secured the second-lowest price on only 5 items. This suggests that if Aldi isn’t the absolute cheapest, it doesn’t typically fall into the “second lowest” competitive range. Also, Aldi’s limited product selection meant that some items on our list couldn’t be compared at all.
Walmart presents itself as Aldi’s closest competitor in this grocery store price comparison. In many instances where Aldi claimed the lowest price, Walmart was a close second, often just pennies more expensive. Walmart’s key advantage lies in its status as a one-stop shop, offering a much wider range of products than Aldi. For some shoppers, the slight price premium at Walmart might be justified by the convenience of purchasing all their groceries and household essentials in a single trip. If you regularly combine grocery shopping with other needs like household goods or clothing, Walmart’s comprehensive selection could be a compelling factor.
Kroger, based on everyday prices, appears to be the most expensive of the four when not considering sales. However, it’s crucial to remember that Kroger is known for its aggressive sales and promotions, often offering deals that can beat Aldi’s everyday low prices. This price comparison focuses solely on regular prices and does not account for sales, where Kroger can become significantly more competitive. Furthermore, Kroger’s loyalty programs, including fuel rewards and digital coupons, provide additional savings opportunities not offered by Aldi or Walmart. These factors should be considered when evaluating the overall value proposition of each store.

Next, identify the grocery stores most accessible to you, including your regular shopping destinations and stores you may have overlooked recently. You might be surprised by what you discover!
Then, armed with your list, price these 25 items at your local grocery stores and nearby chains. Pro Tip: Many grocery stores now offer online price viewing through their websites or apps, allowing you to conduct price research from home. Aldi, however, typically requires an in-store visit to obtain accurate prices, as online prices via Instacart may be slightly inflated. For a true price comparison, an in-person Aldi price check is recommended.
