Like you, I’m a budget-conscious shopper always on the lookout for the best deals. For my family, stretching every dollar at the grocery store is a must. This personal need led me on a mission to Compare Grocery Store Prices and identify where you can truly save the most.

Over the years, I’ve been frequently asked questions that highlight the common quest for savings:

  • Is Walmart really cheaper than Aldi?
  • How does Meijer’s pricing compare to Kroger?
  • Between Kroger and Walmart, who wins on price?
  • Aldi versus Kroger – which is easier on the wallet?
  • Walmart against Kroger – who is the budget champion?
  • And the ultimate question: Is Aldi actually cheaper than Walmart?

These are all crucial questions, and I’m here to provide answers!

Living in northern Indiana gives me access to a variety of grocery options, including Meijer, Kroger, Aldi, and Walmart. I appreciate Meijer for its meat sales, Aldi for its streamlined, budget-friendly shopping experience, and Kroger for its fantastic sales events. While Walmart isn’t my favorite store aesthetically, I can’t deny their appeal for low prices and the convenience of one-stop shopping.

This project represents my most comprehensive grocery price comparison yet. The results of my deep dive into finding the cheapest grocery store surprised me, and I’m excited to share these insights with you today so you can save money on your grocery bills!

So, grab a seat and get ready for a detailed look at grocery prices. Are you ready to discover how to effectively compare grocery store prices and find the cheapest options? Let’s get started!

Note: This is my fifth price comparison update in six years. I first conducted this research in 2019, with updates in 2021, 2022, and 2023. (I skipped 2020 due to the challenges of accurate price collection during that year.) Given the rapid increase in inflation, I conducted this latest update in April 2024 to help us all navigate rising grocery costs.

Methodology: How We Compared Grocery Store Prices

To conduct a thorough grocery store price comparison, I focused on major grocery chains with a significant presence across the United States. Walmart is known for its national reach and promise of low prices. Aldi positions itself as even cheaper than Walmart. Meijer and Kroger, while often perceived as higher-end, also have a wide footprint and attractive sales. I chose these four – Walmart, Aldi, Meijer, and Kroger – for a direct and meaningful price comparison. I excluded big-box stores like Sam’s and Costco due to bulk sizing inconsistencies and specialty stores like Trader Joe’s, Whole Foods, and Winco Foods as they don’t carry the full range of comparable items needed for this study.

My process began by creating a comprehensive list of common grocery items that most households regularly purchase. I included everyday staples and items my family uses frequently. To ensure a broad perspective, I also consulted the Joyfully Thriving Facebook page community for their suggestions, which added valuable items to the list.

To ensure a balanced representation across different store sections, I organized the list into 10 key grocery categories:

  • Dairy
  • Pantry Staples
  • Canned Goods
  • Condiments (like Peanut Butter and Ketchup)
  • Baking Supplies
  • Meat (Fresh and Frozen)
  • Frozen Foods
  • Paper Products & Household Items (like Toilet Paper)
  • Personal Care Products
  • Diapers

In total, I compiled a list of 183 items across these 10 categories to compare prices across all four stores.

I developed a detailed spreadsheet to track and compare grocery store prices for each item. I visited each of the four stores, meticulously noting down prices. I also utilized store apps to verify and check prices where available.

For consistency, I primarily compared generic or store-brand versions of products, opting for the most affordable private-label option at each store, rather than name brands. Fresh produce was excluded from this price comparison due to significant seasonal price variations.

I standardized pricing by comparing prices per ounce. When package sizes differed from my standard list, I calculated the price per ounce to ensure an apples-to-apples comparison and always selected the lowest price per ounce. I aimed to keep sizes as consistent as possible across the board.

Crucially, this price comparison is based on everyday prices and does NOT include sales or promotional discounts. The goal was to determine which store consistently offers the lowest base prices.

It’s important to remember that grocery prices can vary regionally. The prices reported here reflect Northern Indiana prices as of April 2024. However, the relative price rankings and comparisons should still provide valuable insights for saving money on groceries regardless of your location.

2024 Grocery Store Price Comparison Results

After extensive shopping trips and price research using store apps, my comprehensive price comparison list was complete. To analyze the data and determine the cheapest grocery store, I first identified and highlighted the absolute lowest price for each of the 183 items. In cases of a tie for the lowest price, both stores were highlighted.

During the analysis, I observed that prices were often very close between stores, sometimes differing by only pennies. Recognizing that shoppers often purchase multiple items in one trip, I decided to also highlight prices that were within 5 cents of the lowest price. This identified stores offering the second-best deals, acknowledging that convenience and minimal price differences might influence shopping choices.

Instances of exact price matches and close second-lowest prices were common across multiple stores. All instances were counted, which accounts for why the numbers might not appear to sum perfectly at first glance. For those who appreciate data analysis, like myself, the methodology ensures a comprehensive reflection of the price landscape!

Finally, I tallied the results, expressing them both numerically and as percentages (out of the total 183 items). Here are the key findings of the 2024 grocery store price comparison:

2024 Results Aldi Meijer Kroger Walmart
Lowest Price 126 12 9 44
Second Lowest 5 7 5 40
Total Lowest 131 19 14 84
Lowest Price Percentage 69% 7% 5% 24%
Second Lowest Percentage 3% 4% 3% 22%
Total Lowest Percentage 72% 11% 8% 46%

The results clearly show Aldi leading with the highest number of lowest prices, while Kroger has the fewest. Although there were some categories where all four stores had prices within a nickel of each other, these instances were relatively infrequent.

Aldi offered the lowest price on nearly two-thirds of the items on my extensive comparison list. This is a significant margin! These findings are motivating me to increase my shopping at Aldi, even though they may not stock every single item I need.

Aldi dominated the lowest price category across almost a third of the product categories. Interestingly, while Aldi had the lowest price on over 125 items, they were only the second lowest on just 5 items. This suggests that if Aldi isn’t the absolute cheapest, it often isn’t a close contender for the second-lowest price either. Furthermore, Aldi’s limited selection meant that several items on my list couldn’t be compared at all.

However, Walmart is a strong competitor to Aldi. In many cases where Aldi had the lowest price, Walmart was just a few cents behind. Walmart’s key advantage is being a one-stop shop, offering a much wider range of products than Aldi. For some shoppers, the convenience of purchasing everything in one place may outweigh slightly higher prices on certain items. If you regularly buy household essentials and clothing along with groceries, Walmart might be preferable to Aldi.

Kroger, based on everyday prices without sales, is definitely pricier. However, Kroger frequently offers substantial sales and deals that can surpass Aldi’s everyday low prices. This price comparison doesn’t account for sales, masking this advantage. Additionally, Kroger provides gas rewards and a wider array of digital coupons, which neither Aldi nor Walmart match. These benefits are important factors to consider when evaluating overall value.

Determining the Cheapest Grocery Store: The Verdict

Based purely on everyday low prices, Aldi emerges as the cheapest grocery store in 2024. Walmart secures the runner-up position, with Meijer and Kroger trailing behind in this specific price comparison.

This provides a solid starting point, but there’s more to consider when aiming for the absolute lowest grocery bills.

Finding the Cheapest Grocery Store Near You: A Local Approach

For me, in northern Indiana, Aldi is the clear winner for everyday low prices. But what if Aldi isn’t readily accessible in your area?

Walmart is likely the most widely accessible cheap grocery store nationwide, offering consistently low prices on groceries. I say “likely” because Walmart’s strategy focuses on everyday low prices rather than sales, and strategic sale shopping can unlock even greater savings.

To pinpoint the most affordable grocery stores in your specific location, conducting your own quick price comparison at local stores is the most effective strategy. Here’s a guide on how to perform this price comparison in under an hour.

Begin by compiling a list of 20 to 25 items that you purchase regularly. Starting with a smaller list prevents feeling overwhelmed. (Trust me, comparing 183 items is a significant undertaking!) Focus on the two dozen or so staples you use weekly to start your personalized price comparison.

Next, list the grocery stores closest to you. Include stores where you typically shop, as well as those you may not have visited recently. You might be surprised by what you discover!

Then, take your list and price these 25 items at your local grocery stores and nearby grocery chains. Quick tip: Many grocery stores now feature websites or apps where you can conveniently check prices from home. Aldi, however, typically requires an in-store visit to see actual prices. Aldi uses Instacart for online orders, where prices are slightly higher than in-store. For an accurate price comparison, visiting Aldi in person is recommended.

After comparing prices across your local stores, the most affordable grocery option near you should become apparent. I encourage you to share your findings in the comments – what is the cheapest grocery store in your area?

Grocery Price Inflation: A Year-Over-Year Look

This 2024 study marks the fifth time I’ve conducted this detailed grocery price comparison over the past six years, with previous studies in 2019, 2021, 2022, and 2023.

While grocery prices have generally increased over the past year, Aldi continues to hold its position as the cheapest option, consistent with the 2023 findings. Notably, Walmart’s lowest prices have slightly decreased, while Aldi’s have continued a modest upward trend.

2023 Results Aldi Meijer Kroger Walmart
Lowest Price 124 12 10 48
Second Lowest 3 14 9 44
Total Lowest 127 26 19 92
Lowest Price Percentage 68% 7% 5% 26%
Second Lowest Percentage 1% 8% 5% 24%
Total Lowest Percentage 69% 14% 10% 50%

Here are the 2022 price comparison results for further context:

2022 Results Aldi Meijer Kroger Walmart
Lowest Price 115 22 17 68
Second Lowest 14 14 6 37
Total Lowest 121 36 23 105
Lowest Price Percentage 63% 12% 9% 37%
Second Lowest Percentage 3% 8% 3% 20%
Total Lowest Percentage 66% 20% 12% 57%

And for those interested in historical trends, here are the 2021 results:

2021 Results Aldi Meijer Kroger Walmart
Lowest Price 114 15 16 52
Second Lowest 4 12 4 45
Total Lowest 118 27 20 97
Lowest Price Percentage 62% 8% 9% 28%
Second Lowest Percentage 2% 7% 2% 25%
Total Lowest Percentage 64% 15% 11% 53%

Interestingly, when I first conducted this research in 2019, Walmart was the cheapest. The 2019 results highlight a significant shift in the grocery price landscape:

2019 Results Aldi Meijer Kroger Walmart
Lowest Price 56 15 26 97
Second Lowest 3 11 16 32
Total Lowest 59 26 42 129
Lowest Price Percentage 31% 8% 15% 54%
Second Lowest Percentage 2% 6% 9% 18%
Total Lowest Percentage 33% 15% 24% 72%

What’s the key takeaway? Grocery prices are dynamic and require ongoing monitoring.

Since my initial 2019 comparison, Aldi’s share of the lowest prices has surged from 33% to 72%! Conversely, Walmart, which initially held the top spot with 72% of the lowest prices, has seen that number decrease to 46%. These are substantial changes, underscoring the need for regular price checks.

Remember, these price comparisons are based on everyday prices and do not factor in sales. Shopping strategically at different stores to capitalize on sales remains a powerful money-saving strategy. Some stores, even if generally pricier, offer excellent sales that allow for stocking up on items at significantly reduced costs.

Personally, I review weekly ads and take advantage of Kroger’s sales, as their sale prices often beat even Aldi and Walmart’s everyday low prices. I then supplement with less frequent stock-up trips to Aldi to capitalize on their consistently low base prices for staples. This blended approach currently works best for me, but I continuously re-evaluate to ensure I’m shopping as smartly as possible.

Smart Grocery Shopping: Leveraging Price Comparison Data

Understanding which grocery store is generally the cheapest is valuable information that should inform our shopping habits.

Following this price comparison, I now have a clear guide on items to prioritize buying at Aldi and those where other stores might offer better value or selection. I’ve also used this data to develop a stock-up price list for common grocery items, enabling me to recognize and seize exceptional sales at any store. (This comprehensive list is included in my printable grocery ebook, detailed below.)

If you prefer to shop primarily at one store for convenience, Aldi is the recommended choice for maximizing savings. However, for truly optimizing your grocery budget, shopping at multiple stores strategically is the most effective approach.

Knowing the typical low prices for your pantry staples allows you to build your stockpile when prices are at their absolute lowest. The most effective strategy is to combine everyday low-price shopping with capitalizing on exceptional sales. This combination maximizes your purchasing power and stretches your food budget further.

My personal plan moving forward involves more frequent shopping trips to Aldi to take advantage of their everyday low prices on staple groceries, supplemented by strategic shopping at Kroger for their sales. I’ll also continue to watch for meat sales, particularly on ground beef, at Meijer. Walmart remains a convenient option for quick pickups when low prices are needed, given their competitive pricing on many items. My overarching approach is to shop where I can get the best value for every grocery dollar. Fortunately, having all these stores in close proximity allows me to easily take advantage of diverse deals.

Utilizing store apps to proactively check prices will also become a more routine part of my shopping. I’ve already found it incredibly helpful, even comparing prices in-aisle at Kroger against Walmart’s prices to decide whether to buy an item on sale at Kroger or wait for a Walmart run. The price differences can be substantial, making these quick comparisons worthwhile!
