(2020 was skipped due to the challenges of obtaining consistent pricing during that year.) Given the current inflationary environment, this latest update was completed in April 2024 to provide the most relevant savings guidance.
Methodology: How We Compared Grocery Store Prices
To conduct a robust Compare Grocery Store analysis, I focused on major grocery chains with a significant national presence in the United States. Walmart, a nationwide retailer, is widely recognized for its low-price strategy. Aldi positions itself as beating Walmart on price, but is this claim accurate? Meijer and Kroger, while often perceived as higher-end, are also widespread and feature substantial sales. Warehouse clubs like Sam’s and Costco were excluded due to bulk sizing inconsistencies, and specialty stores such as Trader Joe’s, Whole Foods, and Winco Foods were omitted because they don’t carry the full range of comparable products needed for a fair evaluation. Therefore, Walmart, Aldi, Meijer, and Kroger were selected as the four key stores for this price comparison.
The process began by compiling a comprehensive list of common grocery items that most households regularly purchase. This list was expanded to include specific items my family uses frequently. Further input was gathered from the Joyfully Thriving Facebook page, where community suggestions added valuable items to the comparison.
To ensure a balanced representation across the grocery store, I organized the items into 10 distinct shopping categories:
- Dairy
- Pantry Staples
- Canned Goods
- Condiments (Peanut Butter, Ketchup, etc.)
- Baking Supplies
- Meat (Fresh and Frozen)
- Frozen Foods
- Paper Products and Household Items
- Personal Care Products
- Diapers
This resulted in a detailed list of 183 items across these 10 categories, all of which were priced at each of the four stores.
A large spreadsheet was created to manage and compare the prices of all 183 items. Prices were collected through in-store visits to all four grocery stores and supplemented by price checks using store mobile apps.
The price comparison focused on the least expensive generic or store-brand versions available at each store, rather than name-brand products, to ensure an apples-to-apples comparison of baseline grocery costs. Fresh produce was intentionally excluded due to significant seasonal price fluctuations.
Prices were compared on an ounce-to-ounce basis. When product sizes differed from the standard unit on the list, prices were adjusted to reflect the cost per ounce, ensuring the lowest price per ounce was recorded. Efforts were made to compare similar sizes whenever possible.
To maintain a consistent comparison, only regular, everyday prices were used, excluding any promotional or sale prices. The goal was to determine which store offered the lowest base prices.
It’s important to note that these prices reflect Northern Indiana in April 2024. While prices can vary regionally, the relative price relationships observed in this comparison should offer valuable insights for grocery shoppers nationwide.
2024 Grocery Store Price Comparison Results: Aldi Takes the Crown
After numerous shopping trips and extensive research using store apps, the comprehensive price list was finalized. Once all prices were tallied, I began a detailed analysis to determine the cheapest grocery store.
The first step was to identify and highlight the absolute lowest price for each of the 183 items. In cases where multiple stores offered the same lowest price, all tied stores were highlighted.
During the comparison, it became evident that prices were often very close between stores, sometimes differing by mere pennies. Recognizing that shoppers often consolidate their purchases at a single store for convenience, I decided to also identify and highlight prices that were within 5 cents of the lowest price. This marked items as “second lowest price” options, indicating still highly competitive deals.
There were instances where stores had precisely the same lowest price, and similarly, multiple stores often had prices within the second-lowest price range. All instances were counted, which might lead to slight discrepancies in simple addition, but provides a comprehensive view for detailed analysis.
Finally, the totals were tallied – both in item counts and percentages (out of 183 items). The results are presented below:

Aldi boasted the lowest price on nearly two-thirds of the 183 items compared. This is a substantial finding, prompting a re-evaluation of shopping habits, even considering Aldi’s limited product range.
Aldi led in almost a third of the shopping categories. Interestingly, while Aldi had the lowest price on over 125 items, it only ranked second-lowest on just 5 items. This suggests that if Aldi is not the absolute lowest, it is generally not competitive in terms of price. Additionally, Aldi’s limited selection meant that some items on the list were not available for comparison at all.
As for Walmart, it emerges as a strong contender against Aldi. In many cases where Aldi had the lowest price, Walmart’s prices were just pennies higher. Walmart’s key advantage is its status as a one-stop shop, offering a much wider range of products than Aldi. For some shoppers, the convenience of purchasing everything in one location may justify paying slightly more for certain items. If you regularly purchase household goods and clothing alongside groceries, Walmart may be preferable to Aldi.
Kroger’s everyday prices are notably higher when sales are not considered. However, Kroger compensates with frequent and significant sales and deals that often surpass Aldi’s everyday low prices. This price comparison, focusing solely on regular prices, does not reflect the potential savings from sales. It’s important to reiterate that these price comparisons do not account for sales. Shopping at multiple grocery stores to leverage sales remains a highly effective strategy for saving money. Some of the more premium grocery stores can become surprisingly affordable when capitalizing on strategic sales and promotions.
Personally, I regularly check weekly ads and take advantage of Kroger’s exceptional sales, as their promotional prices often beat even Aldi’s everyday low prices. Then, I supplement with less frequent stock-up trips to Aldi to capitalize on their consistently low base prices for staples.
